Raw and beautiful directly from the volcano

In the private home of architect Sarkis Sarkisyan from the BIG architects in Copenhagen, the bathroom floors and walls are clad with unglazed tiels of natural lavastone. With terrazzo-like effects, this natural volcanic basalt stone brings durability and simplicity to the bathroom. Combined with brushed dark fixtures from Vola, the tiles create a raw and refined design.

The raw lava tiles are extracted from Mount Etna in Sicily, just like marble and other natural stones, in large blocks from quarries and then cut into slabs and tiles. After sealing and waxing, the tile becomes resistant to water and dirt and will develop a beautiful patina over time.

For this project, a complementary grout color was chosen to create simplicity and highlight the material quality of the tile. Raw lava tiles are available in many custom formats with a delivery time of 5-6 weeks directly from Sicily.
